The handbook of design management
The Handbook of Design Management is a significant volume in that it brings together leading scholars past and present in Design Management into a single volume. The Handbook covers the breadth of principles, methods and practices that shape design management across the different design disciplines. These theories and practices extend from operational to strategic, from the product to the organisation. The first such handbook since Oakley (1990). Cooper developed the proposal for the book, its structure and international contributors.
Cooper led on the original research and contributed 90% of the introductory review chapter. This involved a detailed review and analysis of the literature in the field since 1960 and is one of the first reviews of the history of the topic, this included the establishment of a classification of the changes that have taken place. Cooper also wrote 90% of the concluding chapter that illuminates the gaps in the field and provides a basis on which scholars can further develop the area.
The originality lies in both the review of the field, the articulation of the design disciplines development and the questions posed for the future of the topic. It also documents the shifts that have been taking place, both in management and design.
