English abstract

Italian. The volume tracks the stylistic evolution of Italian cinema from post-war Neorealism to the present through close analysis of mise-en-scène in a number of relevant films – from The Earth Trembles, Bitter Rice and Voyage to Italy to La dolce vita, The Leopard, We All Loved Each Other So Much, Dario Argento’s horror films and My Mother’s Smile among many others. Zagarrio approaches each case study through a detailed breakdown of its structural components, in many cases accompanied by shot-by-shot analyses. This methodology allows for a counter-reading of Italian cinema that sheds lights on wider contexts.
