Performance: Massed Bands of HM Royal Marines, Dir. Lt.Col Chris Davis MBE, Mountbatten Festival of Music, Royal Albert Hall, London (March 2009)

Commissioned for the 2009 Mountbatten Festival of Music for performance by the massed bands of HM Royal Marines, directed by Lt Col Chris Davis OBE, the work was produced to incorporate solo, ensemble and pre-recorded elements for the finale of the band’s four performances at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The piece extends and develops themes by Swiss film composer Matthias Gunthert and combines a pre-recorded originally composed soundtrack, along with composed material for the massed bands. Elements of the soundtrack were manipulated to exploit the spatialisation within the Royal Albert Hall. Using for example sub-audible drones in dispersed layout. This was the first time in the long history of the Festival that the ensemble had been merged with a pre-recorded soundtrack.
