Biomechanical characterisation of ovine spinal facet joint cartilage
First study to characterise biphasic properties of facet joint cartilage using combined experimental and computational approach, published in leading biomechanics journal. New data presented is needed to develop successful therapies for facet degeneration and for computational models of spine where properties have previously been approximated. Pilot study for this work formed basis of Spine Theme of successful £5M EPSRC Programme Grant proposal (EP/G012172/1). Methods now adopted by other researchers to characterise human cartilage and fed into ERC grant (ERC306615, £1M, Wilcox). Research recognised through international conferences (podiums European Biomechanics Edinburgh 2010, World Biomechanics Singapore 2010).
