Moving Art Box - A Gallery based performance piece
The research focus of ‘Moving Art Box’ questioned the status and authorship of an artwork and its production; along with its relation to curation and presentation to the public. Hutchinson worked as UK artist curator with the originators of the project, ‘6 Pack’ an artist group based in Wuppertal, Germany.
Over an eighteen month period a 1.5m2 crate first filled with artworks in Wuppertal was freighted to six venues across Europe. Upon receipt of the Moving Art Box, each venue would open the box and display the artworks. Each participating group were invited to make an exhibition of the contents, and, add to, destroy or otherwise transform the artworks in the crate. The box would then be repacked including the new additions and subversions of the existing artworks, and sent to the next venue. Each time the box was opened it served not only as a representation of the culture of the senders but offered opportunities in critical analysis, intervention and overlaying of the new culture. A final exhibition of the Art Box contents, was made by each group at the Neuer Kunstverein, Wuppertal. For the closing event Hutchinson extended the research focus by performing an auto - destruct VJ work, featuring a specially made video of incidental street episodes being transformed live, with a simultaneous, free-form, a live mixing/video projection.
The exhibition was regarded by art Das Kunstmagazine (an international art publication) as amongst the top five exhibitions to visit in Germany that week. http://www.art-magazin.de/kunst/61209/gib_mir_fuenf_ausstellungstipps
