Additional information

This is a body of fine art research conducted through studio practice. Thompson’s investigation resulted in 19 sculptures exhibited as collections of art work in three exhibitions underpinned by and referencing the traditions of 18th Century landscape art from early topographical landscape and ideas of the picturesque (Gilpin, Cotman, Turner) painting to 20th century concerns with “truth to materials” ( Moore, Epstein, Brancusi).

The project sought to develop new methods and insights into the representation of landscape. The research links ideas of “physical embodiment” in the experience of landscape (explored through walking) with the physical engagement with materials in the making of sculpture.

Sculptures from the research were selected and new work commissioned for the following exhibitions: Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff, 40 Years of Art Walking (PM Gallery and House, London (26 March – 5 May 2013, the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland (1 June – 31 August 2013), tour in 2014 (Art Circuit Touring Exhibitions) to the MAC Birmingham; The Atkinson, Southport; and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery);

Surveying Landscape: Brian Thompson and James Wade Jr., Otter Gallery, Chichester (7 December 2012 – 27 January 2013); Kith and Kin 2: National Glass Centre, Sunderland (21 September-31 December 2012).
