Activation of metal-bound η5-C5Me5 groups to Diels–Alder addition of 3O2 and other dienophiles
The paper describes the face-selective addition of dieneophiles to substituted metal-bound cyclopentadienyl groups, an unprecedented, but much sought after reaction. We have extrapolated these results to show stereoselectivity of addition to asymmetrically substituted rings and have been able to extrapolate these results to palladium (but not nickel). On palladium, addition of dienophiles was found to be reversible, again unprecedented. Kinetic data were obtained on a number of systems allowing a greater understanding of the inherent mechanism. The work formed the basis of three PhD Theses and two MSc Theses.
