Additional information

This investigation compares two examples of graphic art from 19th Century Japan and the American Plains Indian of North America, exploring questions relating to the concept of flatness in both traditions. It identified similarities in their approaches to the projection of space, description of movement and composition, highlighting the relevance of these forms to the development of digital games and the application of 2.5 dimensional space.

The paper brought a little known (in the UK) genre of Indian narrative drawing to the attention of professional illustrators and has stimulated interest in cross-cultural comparative analysis at the Smithsonian Institute.
