Additional information

The paper resulted from an EPSRC grant (GR/S27368/01) under its Physics-Engineering Programme. It reports the results of a collaborative modelling study with the University of Oslo that demonstrated, for the first time, (i) the inadequacy of the Richardson number as a sole indicator of the shear stability of fully-nonlinear, internal solitary waves in a 3 layer, stably-stratified fluid and (ii) experimental verification of the stability predictions of a fully nonlinear mathematical analysis.
