For the first time, a novel method of using metallic foams to join metals to non-metallic materials has been realised. Using metal foams as a buffer layer between two materials having different coefficients of expansion, mitigates the thermally induced stresses on the joint interface. The work forms the basis of two current PhD projects. Initiatives to commercialise the process are underway.
