Additional information
Bioceramics and especially hydroxyapatite (HA)-based ceramics are widely used clinically as orthopaedic and dental implants, coatings for implants, scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, drug delivery systems and bone cements. They are, however, severely hampered by limited osteointegration and resorption properties. This study found that the logical alternative carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA), which much closer mimics natural bone, has significant potential as a biomaterial for bone substitution and as a scaffold for bone tissue engineering. This work was perfromed with funding support from EPSRC (EP/F033125/1).
