Array-controlled ultrasonic manipulation of particles in planar acoustic resonator
Significance of output:
A new technique for controlling the position of microscopic particles using ultrasonic radiation forces is presented. An enhanced ability to manipulate particles such as biological cells will enable a new generation of diagnostic, sample handling and tissue engineering systems. Typical radiation force manipulation devices are of limited flexibility, and we show how to overcome this using a new class of design based on a linear array. Mathematical modelling and finite element analysis is presented elucidating how the device operates, and is shown to predict well the manipulation that is demonstrated experimentally.
