Development of new technologies involves first investigating them in the lab and then scaling them up to the pilot plant and finally further scaling them up to plants at commercial scale. A novel approach with the potential to effectively deal with the difficult issues of nonlinearity and noise associated with the scale-up is presented. This work is cited and discussed in a recent review paper in the computers and mathematics literature. This work forms the basis of the work that will be performed in a recently funded EPSRC project on developing reaction kinetics for biomass conversion.
