Significance of output:

Often when performing an optimisation it is difficult to know a priori which variables are the most important and traditional variable screening methods tend to waste considerable simulation effort in attempting to determine this. This paper presented a completely new screening methodology which operated at the geometric rather than variable level by attempting to retain desirable geometric features using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). Airbus, who sponsored the research, have since applied for both US and UK patents (US20100004769 and UK application no. 12493458) to cover this methodology (contact: Carren.Holden@airbus.com).
