Additional information

Large fabricated steel beams are of very considerable economic importance and always use slender webs with vertical (“transverse”) stiffeners. On a firm basis of experimental and numerical data, the paper shows that current design codes (UK, US, Eurocode) frequently lead to stiffeners that are too large or, worse, understrength or too flexible. It provides alternative step-by-step design procedures that may be incorporated in revised versions of the Eurocode, and that will lead to greater safety and economy.
