English abstract

The paper traces the history of studies of the “Drunk Old Woman” prototype known through Roman copies, focusing on the reception of the subject in the history of taste since the discovery of the two copies, and outlining the distance between the modern perception and the original meaning of the subject, which finds its explanation in ancient medicine. Inscriptional evidence together with passages of Plato and Aristotle suggests that the subject of Drunk Old Woman promotes reflections about the hardships of old age and about remedies to combat them.
