The commentary, at nearly 600 pages, is the fruit of over ten years’ work. The Fasti is Ovid’s most sophisticated and challenging work, and elucidation of the text demanded expertise in a wide range of disciplines beyond textual and literary criticism, ranging from the complexities of Greek astronomy to the obscurities of Roman religion, from ornithology to agriculture. The commentary was therefore very research-intensive, but the collection, analysis, and synthesis of such a considerable amount of material has illuminated how the Fasti plays with the monuments, rituals, and skies of Rome just as it does with a literary text.
