English abstract

In this article Ma assigns small body of inscribed sling bullets, with a certain location, to a known group of such material, from Kameiros (Rhodes). He classifies and typologizes this material. He further offers an interpretation in terms of context and function (not Rhodian production, but the archaeology of high political history, namely the armies of Demetrios Poliorketes), This precise piece of scholarship leads to broader questions about the type of material (the piece dispels much beloved cliches about inscribed sling bullets) and about the use of literacy and communication in Hellenistic armies
