Double-weighted statement

The Theban Epics is the first part of a multi-volume commentary (at least 4 volumes in total) on the surviving fragments of early Greek epic. It contains totally new and original research: on literature (a commentary proper on the fragments themselves) but also on various artefacts (especially vase paintings) which have been supposed to reflect the largely lost epics, by depicting scenes from them. The fragments are exhaustively investigated from every relevant angle, especially stylistic and linguistic. The whole multi-volume has taken over twenty years to write and then revise. The first part is c. sixty thousand words.
