After Modernist Painting: The History of a Contemporary Practice
Published by the internationally renowned publishing house I.B.Tauris in February 2013, After Modernist Painting: The History of a Contemporary Practice is a critical re-evaluation of the contested and contingent nature of the medium of painting over the last 50 years. Alongside the salient themes and issues that have informed the critical trajectory of painting during this period, the study also examines a number of debates that inform the practice of painting today. The research undertaken for this particular study builds upon the research findings that were educed within the previous study, Modernist Painting and Materiality, ISBN 978-0-7864-4714-5, published in April 2011 by McFarland. To this end, whilst the research in one sense was oriented towards a particular set of questions and issues raised by modernist painting, After Modernist Painting: The History of a Contemporary Practice uses the research as a critical and historical point of departure. As a peer-reviewed, single-authored publication, what makes the publication distinctive is the fact that it seeks to examine and understand the debates and issues that pertained to painting during the period in question rather than, as previous studies have attempted to do, the practice of art per se. To this end, the novel insights it engenders stem from a critical repositioning of the medium of painting, including what arguably could be considered as more marginalised forms of practice within a broader set of contexts, debates and ideas. The publication carries endorsments from John Moores Painting Prize winner Dan Hays and David Ryan, Reader in Fine Art at the Anglia Ruskin University.
