Significance of output:

This paper presents the first use of a resonant standing wave inside a sonoporation system to achieve cell transfection, whereby target molecules are introduced into the cell without causing cell damage. The paper describes the theoretical design of the chamber, initial laboratory characterisation and full clinical experimental testing carried out at Southampton General Hospital with HeLa cells. This work demonstrates that the approach has the advantage of being gentler than standard non-resonant sonoporation, leading to improved transfection, reduced cell death and consequent clinical benefits.
