Significance of output:

First demonstration of a single integrated device capable of simultaneous, high quality amplification of signals propagating on N-spatial modes of a multimode optical fibre, opening up the possibility of an N-fold enhancement in long-haul transmission capacity relative to existing single-mode technology. This work was performed as part of the 11.8M€ FP7 Integrated-Project “MODEGAP” led by the University of Southampton (http://modegap.eu/) and has enabled the EU/UK to take a world-leading position in the fierce global competition to develop the Space Division Multiplexed optical communication systems required within the next decade to support cost/energy efficient future growth of the internet (see doi:10.1038/nphoton.2013.94).
