Additional information

Segregation is a recurring challenge for industries that handle/store powders. This natural phenomenon has been extensively studied, but overwhelmingly from mechanistic or dynamic viewpoints. This paper argues and demonstrates that static packing characteristics, which are much easier and quicker to measure or simulate, are sufficient to correctly predict the trend of segregation in powdery mixtures (or formulations). A practical implication is that our packing model (DigiPac, developed with EPSRC support EP/D503078/1) can be used as a design tool for powder formulators especially when physical experiments are costly or impractical (e.g., pharmaceutical or nuclear).
