Woodland Sustainable Community Hall, Hill Holt Wood, Lincolnshire [design and construction of]
The Sustainable Community Building is one of the research outputs of a 2-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project between Lincoln School of Architecture and Hill Holt Wood Social Enterprise. The construction of the building started in 2008 and was completed in 2010. The building was officially opened in 2011.
I was the design tutor of the studio in which with students, we created the blueprint of the design for the building. I was also the Knowledge Base Supervisor for the KTP research project. The research is an ongoing one spanning from design phase to construction stage, and currently into post occupancy evaluation. I have recently secure a research funding of 11K from University of Lincoln towards the cost of monitoring equipment to carry out the post occupancy evaluation of the completed building.
An inductive research methodology in addition to an iterative approach were used during the construction phase of the project to further analyse factors influencing the sustainability in the built environment, and to optimise design solutions and specifications to minimise carbon footprint of the building. In addition, sustainable construction practices and processes were identified through research into sustainable sourcing of materials, project management, waste reduction, efficient use of resources including energy and water.
Likewise the design stage, the research carried out during the construction phase of the building employed whole Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and carbon reporting exercise together with a holistic approach to sustainability by addressing the social, economic and environmental aspects simultaneously in order to arrive at a truly sustainable building.
The Community Building is a recipient of prestigious awards including; Lord Stafford Award for Innovation for Sustainability and three Green Apple Environment Awards.
