A methodology for recycling ceramic waste - harnessing the creative potential of re-cycled glass and ceramic waste
In 2010 Binns was invited to give a presentation to the NCECA international ceramic conference ‘Green Task Force’ working group (Philadelphia, USA), outlining how recycled ceramic materials may be integrated into ceramic studio practice.
Following participating in the International Ceramics Symposium, in Gothenburg, Sweden (Output 3), Binns was invited by Nancy Selvage (Ceramic programme director – Harvard University), to submit a paper to the 2012 NCECA conference, in Seattle USA, as part of collaborative presentation addressing sustainable ceramic practice. The (peer reviewed) paper was presented at the conference and featured in the conference journal.
NCECA (National Council for Education in Ceramic Arts) is the world’s largest conference within the field of ceramics and ceramic education. “NCECA fosters global education and appreciation for the ceramic arts; organizing exhibitions, publications and opportunities that inspire advancement of the field." The annual conference involves around 8000 international delegates, with its journal and activities shaping future policy and gaining coverage in numerous international publications.
Following the conference, Robert Harrison (highly regarded international artist and past NCECA president), invited Binns to contribute a chapter to his book:

The chapter outlines his research, developing methodologies for recycling ceramic waste. Harrisons’ book is the first in the field to examine issues of sustainability and environmental responsible practice within ceramics. An example of Binns’ research is featured on the front cover of this new publication.
