A neuro-fuzzy approach to the weight estimation of aircraft structural components
First publication of use of neuro-fuzzy logic techniques for weight estimation of aircraft structures at the preliminary design stage. Allows adaptability and inclusion of new materials and manufacturing to prediction method rather than using existing aircraft regression data. First advancement in the field in over 20 years. Work carried out in collaboration with the Airbus mass properties team (Evangelos.Vekris@Airbus.com), who funded student secondment, and with QinetiQ’s structures and aerodynamics groups (JCHarris@qinetiq.com). Led to further PhD work and Airbus secondment on weight estimation of aircraft hydraulic and electrical systems. Student has since obtained research position at Manufacturing Technology Centre, Coventry (Christine.Hannon@the-mtc.org).
