<31> This study suggested that current metrics research was often neither useful nor effective. There is a large body of metrics related literature but many metrics papers were never cited (not even by their authors). It criticised the research methodology used to validate metrics pointing out that one specific set of metrics had been subject to a large number of validation studies over a period of 16 years suggesting considerable wasted research effort. Knowing when to stop evaluating a specific set of metrics can help researchers focus on more useful research.
