FemtoNewton force sensing with optically trapped nanotubes
This first demonstration of ultra-sensitive manipulation of trapped nanotubes by laser light, inspired other groups (R. Gordon University of Victoria; P Pauzauskie Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Imperial College; S Hanna, University of Bristol) to use this methodology in drug delivery, nanotherapy, nanomaterials sorting. Invited presentations followed at international conferences (MRS and Metrology Standardization and Industrial Quality of Graphene and Nanotubes) and publication in SPIE Newsroom (DOI: 10.1117/2.1200901.1475) for popularization of nanotechnology. The group is applying the technique of interaction of light with carbon nanomaterials in microfluidic devices for building of fibre lasers (Appl.Phys.Lett. 100, 101110 (2012)).
