Calculation of Fully Anisotropic Liquid Crystal Waveguide Modes
The full, rigorous modelling of the optical electromagnetic fields combined with the accurate modelling of liquid crystal behaviour presented here has not been done before and allows accurate design of complex, liquid crystal-tuneable photonic devices. The refractive index change possible with this technique is two orders of magnitude higher than that achieved using semiconductors non-linearities or the piezoelectric effect. Collaborators at Ghent University have demonstrated tuneable optical ring resonators and couplers with liquid crystal cladding using our modelling methods as design tools. The work has led to further collaboration with Prof. A. d’Alessandro, University of Rome.
