Patterning on the microscale: wearable jewellery objects in 'Signs of Change: Jewellery designed to make a better world' exhibition
Objects selected by Dr Kevin Murray (Guest Curator, RMIT, Melbourne, Australia) and Elisha Buttler (Curator, FORM Gallery, Perth, Australia) for the 'Signs of Change: Jewellery designed to make a better world' exhibition, FORM Gallery, Perth, Australia (9 April – 30 May 2010). The designed objects entitled ‘Patterning on the microscale’ are the direct result of a cross-disciplinary collaboration between my own jewellery design practice and the research of materials scientist Dr Lesley Turner, (the University of Manchester). Turner’s research is based on the creation of new structures for stem cell growth. These exhibited objects build upon my PhD research which included microscopic views of titanium oxidation and opened new levels of material understanding through collaborating with Turner and consulting other engineers and scientists. Eyesight correction and the essential use of both eyes needed for binocular vision became metaphors for the research.
For the 'Signs of Change' exhibition the objects exhibited developed from the concept of using sight as a bridging mechanism between the cultures of science and art. The objects also engaged with issues surrounding the public’s understanding of both art and science, exposing aspects of engineering research and of art practice that aim to change persistent preconceptions. The objects were modelled on the idea of a monocle that might be made to individual prescriptions, suggesting that correcting vision would help see the ‘bigger picture’. A full colour exhibition catalogue was produced.
