Design for social innovation: emerging principles and approaches
One of six double blind peer reviewed journal articles in Iridescent, 2(1). Chick uses a deductive reasoning strategy based on a literature review and participatory design (non-technology based) action-based research and project work undertaken with her postgraduate students (between 2009 – 2011). This journal article builds upon the author’s prior research into testing emerging participatory design principles, techniques and tools such as through the ‘youcankingston’ project, collaborating with ThinkPublic, the Young Foundation and the Royal Borough of Kingston (http://www.flickr.com/photos/thinkpublic/sets/72157620338024174/).
Through peer discourse, practical experience and a literature review the author believed there was a gap in the research literature for an article exploring the emerging discourse, language and practices of design for social innovation in order to bring some clarification to the language, principles and approaches. In addition it also provides an overview of the opportunities and challenges for design professionals engaging in design for social innovation project work.
