Additional information

Quantification of 3D porosity distribution in aerospace composite structures improves on current through-thickness average measurements, and enables better-informed decisions to be made about manufacturing defects, hence reducing scrap. This work, and ultrasonic-propagation modelling that stems from it, underpins Smith's recent EPSRC Fellowship in Manufacturing (EP/K037315/1, £1.3M, 2013-8), which is aimed at inversion of ultrasonic-inspection data to provide 3D characterisation of various material properties of composite materials.
