Additional information

Energy efficiency in mobile devices is high-profile research topic; not only for battery lifetime but also for environmental and sustainability goals. It is well known that transmitter amplifiers in handsets dominate energy consumption and that technical challenges of increasing their efficiency whilst supporting high data-rates are immense. Paper is first to present validated topology suitable for handset use with 60% efficiency, which is drastically above that available from commercial products. Work led to industrial interest from Toshiba and their sponsorship of PhD studentship for continuation of work [contact: Deputy Managing Director].
