"This monograph is submitted as a double-weighted output on the basis of ‘The collection and analysis of a considerable body of material.’ The long twentieth-century scope of the book involved detailed analysis of 26 literary texts by 17 authors, 4 films, 1 television drama and the work of 1 visual artist. In providing a thorough historical and conceptual scholarly foundation for that corpus, primary research was undertaken of some earlier material, especially Horace Walpole’s construction of Strawberry Hill and the Earl of Shrewsbury’s renovation of Alton Towers.
