Realising lost histories: the three-dimensional visualisation of Ib Kofod Larsen drawings for GPlan

Initially presented at the international Future Talks 11 symposium in Munich (Oct 2011) at the Pinakotek Modern to an audience of 200+ delegates, this paper was based on collaborative research conducted between Kaner and Tsipotas (Athens Technical Institute) and London Metropolitan University conservation department (Dr Cross Dept of Product and Furniture). Further investigations into the value and applications of new technologies were conducted to enhance the primary material (Ib Kofod-Larsen designs, 1958-67, Denmark for G-Plan, UK), which are housed in the High Wycombe Furniture Archive, created at Bucks by Kaner (2006-2009). These designs have strong interest for designers and historians as they were not put into manufacture, but were produced exclusively for a British furniture manufacturer in order to compete in the highly competitive domestic market of this period as the Scandinavian style was highly desirable. The object of this research was to find out which type of three-dimensional visualisation would be most appropriate to disseminate these unique designs through the HWEFA database/repository to enable them to be an inspirational resource for users. The paper was carefully positioned within the conference programme to enable the audience to digest the discourse on current technologies within the context of preservation of cultural heritage, conservation of modern materials and the use of technologies to exhibit/disseminate in new and innovative ways. The post prints constitute this publication as a peer reviewed edited book, Kaner’s article is chapter five (Published October 23rd 2013), a Munich Design Museum Publication.
