<20> Presented at the top ACM conference on Human-Computer Interaction (CHI), this paper develops a rigorous computational cognitive modelling framework for predicting the safety-implication of using in-car technology while driving. The novelty of this approach was highlighted by a leading authority on cognitive engineering research, Prof. Wayne Gray, during his Presidential address to the 2010 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society conference. Follow-up work, published in a special journal issue on “Innovations in Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making” (Janssen et al., 2012), has demonstrated the reliability and validity of this approach by applying the model to different datasets.
