The Viola da Gamba Society Index of Manuscripts Containing Consort Music. Vol. 2
This volume – the second of a proposed five-volume series – is an outgrowth of The Viola da Gamba Society Thematic Index of Music for Viols, 1980—92 (and updates continuing), a renowned scholarly resource originally compiled by Gordon Dodd and now overseen by the three editors of this series. Whilst the Thematic Index is composer-based, the Index of Manuscripts Containing Consort Music (IMCCM) volumes offer a companion project to catalogue manuscripts containing consort music. IMCCM Volume 1 was published in 2001 and was the recipient of the International Association of Music Libraries C.B. Oldman prize for an outstanding work of music bibliography. The editors, who share the research duties equally for the publications, are all highly experienced in the field and have examined each source afresh. Volume 2 features 45 manuscripts, a number of whose copyists or owners have been identified (John Browne, Philip Falle, Gabriel Roberts, John St Barbe, and the Withy family) and many manuscripts are described in detail for the first time. As well as a detailed inventory of every manuscript (with anonymous work identified where possible), the descriptions include full bibliographic information about each source. Of particular importance is the inclusion of facsimiles of all hands. Also included is a comprehensive study and illustration of watermarks. The key areas of research concern the identification of copyists &/or provenance and dating. Wainwright’s study of the two manuscripts in American libraries was funded by an AHRC award. This new and comprehensive study will be an invaluable tool for future research.
