This monograph offers the first long-term historical study of chiefship and authority in South Sudan. It is based on very extensive research fieldwork as well as archival study, requiring the collection and analysis of a wide range of primary source material which was complex and difficult to assess – oral history, observation, a range of archives, grey material produced by NGOs and government.
