Additional information

Friction is poorly understood: coefficients of friction depend on many parameters and always exhibit large statistical variations even under controlled conditions. In design of frictional machine elements (e.g. shrink fits) failure probability is highly sensitive to coefficient of friction. Paper sets out rigorous experimental approach for investigation of coefficient of friction under varying interface pressures, surface roughnesses and loading directions using rig specially designed for efficient testing of large sample populations. Experimental work is supported by analytical modelling to account for sensitivity of loading direction. Paper is identified as research group highlight in REF5.
