Paper proposes new approach for overcoming problem of stress singularities that arise in Finite-Element (FE) analysis of composite structures at discontinuities. An example is joint on aero-engine vane. Work is of significant practical importance because it allows mesh-independent predictions of failure using linear-elastic FE analysis without empirical fitting factors. Work forms basis of methodology that has been adopted by Rolls-Royce plc., and passed their Critical Capability Acquisition Review in October 2011 demonstrating that it is at Technology Readiness Level 4 [contact: Composites UTC Coordinator].
