Additional information

In a gas turbine engine, the work done by rotating surfaces in overcoming friction (windage) can be significant in relation to the total energy consumed.

The work, funded by the EU (Framework 5, ICAS-GT2) and manufacturers: Rolls-Royce, Snecma, ITP, MTU, Siemens, Turbomeca and Volvo; extends existing range of moment coefficient data to non-dimensional conditions, representative of engine conditions; allowing engine designers to accurately predict windage power. A correlation of this data is presented and because of the extended validity range, has been adopted by Rolls-Royce and other companies in their design codes.
