Additional information

This paper is the first to link a control engineering design principle that is used extensively in process industry, "cascade control", to the feedback mechanism that bacteria use to chemotax (swim away from toxic and towards useful substances). It shows that feedback design principles we use in Engineering are used in the natural world; this opens the door to investigating other design principles in nature and how they can be used in Engineering. The paper follows the convention in the life sciences that the lead author (PI) is listed last.
