This paper resulted from EU project (PIIF-GA-2008-220079 DEW-COOL) to study a novel indirect evaporative cooling system using a counter-flow M-cycle heat exchanger. The study showed the new exchanger has over 20% higher cooling capacity and 15-23% higher cooling efficiency than existing cross-flow exchangers. It led to technology transfer from university to industry (Patent PCT/GB2009/002276: A Novel Dew Point Air Conditioning System, licensed to Keda Ltd (http://dgkeda.appliances-china.com/, junzhex@sina.com)). The findings help overcome the barriers to implementation of evaporative cooling systems in buildings, i.e. their large size and insufficient cooling output and the work enables realisation of near zero-carbon building cooling systems.
