Additional information

This paper is the first to demonstrate the use of Variable Structure Control (VSC) to greatly reduce transients in ultrasonic transducers and thereby increase the capacity of communication systems based on ultrasonic transducers by more than an order of magnitude. It will improve the accuracy of ultrasonic localisation by the same amount. Based on this paper and earlier discussions with the authors, at least one company, ON Semiconductor, has already started using VSC controlled transducers. In an American Navy research contract, Creare has identified such ultrasonic devices as vital for communications in noisy environments (http://www.navysbir.com/13_1/207.htm).
