Additional information

This was part of a collaborative EPSRC-funded project with Airbus and Alcoa. Using the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the ISIS neutron source complete 3D mapping of residual stresses in welded aircraft aluminium alloys was achieved, and the effect of subsequent surface dressing evaluated. Contrary to expectations we found that surface machining did not reduce the peak stress, even though the stress distribution changed. This result is critical to evaluating fatigue crack growth rates in welded aircraft structures. The success of this approach initiated our work on combining different residual stress measurement techniques for efficient stress field mapping.
