Elastic buckling of elliptical tubes
Elliptical-hollow-tubes were being used, for aesthetical reasons, without clear understanding of their behaviour and stability. This is the first paper thoroughly explaining the elastic local-buckling modes and loads in elliptical-hollow-tubes under compression, considering the entire eccentricity range, from circular to plate sections, identifying all the parameters involved, and providing accurate formulae to determine elastic buckling loads. This paper initiated significant research activity worldwide towards the definition of design loads in elliptical-hollow-sections. Around thirty research papers by others have used these formulae [doi:10.1016/j.tws.2008.11.004, doi:10.1016/j.tws.2009.01.001,doi:10.1016/j.engstruct.2012.06.040, doi:10.1016/j.tws.2012.02.012, doi:10.1061/(ASCE)EM.1943-7889.0000141, doi:10.1061/(ASCE)ST.1943-541X.0000005, doi:10.1016/j.engstruct.2008.07.004 ], which were developed in a manner to facilitate implementation in Eurocodes.
