The planning for this volume commenced in 2006, and resulted in the conference on the Synoptic Problem being held in Oxford in April 2008. The volume was envisaged as the centenary replacement for the famous Oxford Studies in the Synoptic Problem (1911). Foster, with co-editors, assembled the list of contributors. He commissioned approximately ten of the articles, edited and co-edited nine of the thirty-three chapters, and contributed the chapter on the M-Source.
