Voltage-programmable liquid optical interface
New optical device concept exploiting Liquid-Dielectrophoresis (L-DEP). Industrial CASE project funded by EPSRC/DTI, The COMIT Faraday Partnership (H. Coles), and Kodak European Research (Cambridge, UK: J. Fyson). Recognised by 2009 Sharp-SID Best Student Award to Wells (www.sid.org/Chapters/uki/SharpSIDBestStudentAward.aspx). Led to further funding to develop L-DEP in anisotropic fluids (EPSRC linked grants EP/J009865/1 and EP/J009873/1; project P.I. is Brown, with Wilson/Mottram/Duffy at Strathclyde University) in collaboration with Merck Chemicals Ltd (Chilworth, UK: M. Goulding, materials), Bartels Microtechnik (Dortmund, Germany: F. Bartels, microfluidics applications) and Hewlett-Packard (Bristol: A. Geisow, displays applications).
