Prophecy and Sibylline imagery in the Renaissance: Shakespeare’s Sibyls
Justification for double weighting. This book examines the multiple uses of Sibylline imagery and prophecy in early modern English culture. It engages in a detailed study of the use of sibylline imagery drawn diverse and extensive primary sources from medieval and classical material. It includes an original chapter on a unique poetry sequence by an woman poet, as well as a chapter on the use of the figure in Reformation polemic, Elizabethan court verse, and Early Modern drama. Each of its seven chapters required extensive research of manuscript and print sources, along with detailed analysis commensurate with a research article.
