Opposition In Discourse: The Construction of Oppositional Meaning
Opposition in Discourse is the culmination of a number of research projects by the author, each of which approaches the textual construction of oppositional meaning from a different angle and/or genre. Using data from news reporting, poetry, political campaigning and advertising, the book builds a theoretical argument for the existence of a separate, textual, layer of meaning, between the entirely de-contextual system of language and the entirely contextual pragmatic functions of language. Based on extensive data analysis and empirical observation, the theory of opposition developed in this monograph has significant implications for theories of language to follow.
